A Birding Paradise – Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel

A serene retreat with a birding bonus: Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel

Nestled in a private 12-acre cloud forest reserve, the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is a tranquil escape for travelers seeking both comfort and connection with nature. Located just across from the train station in Machu Picchu Pueblo (formerly Aguas Caliente) this eco-friendly luxury hotel is one of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World. I  spent one night here back in 2019 and for my return trip In May 2024, I booked two nights.  With more than 214 species of birds recorded here, I wanted more time to explore the  birding paradise of Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

Nature and Wildlife

One of the unique aspects of Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is its proximity to nature.  This was our only cloud forest destination on this particular trip, and Inkaterra provides a wonderful introduction to this distinctive ecosystem. I hoped to see some of the colorful species of tanagers and hummingbirds found at this elevation.   An early morning bird-watching tour, led by the hotel’s resident ornithologist did not disappoint.  In a few hours we spotted a total of 29 species of colorful tropical birds, including a few that were new to my life list! (My eBird list for the morning is here.) We explored the hotel’s extensive network of trails, which meander through the forest, past waterfalls, and along the banks of the Urubamba River. We followed the call of the distinctive Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, but it played hard to get and didn’t make an appearance.  The  banana feeders, however   provided great views and photos of some of the most spectacular species.

Eco-Friendly Accommodations

Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel offers a range of accommodations, from cozy casitas to spacious villas. My room was the basic, but  charming, casita with whitewashed walls and large windows that framed stunning views of the forest. The interior was tastefully decorated with local textiles and handcrafted furniture, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The deluxe suites and villas include more amenities – from fireplaces to plunge pools, and even private gardens.

Sustainable Practices

Inkaterra is renowned for its commitment to sustainability and conservation, and this ethos is evident throughout the property. The hotel operates with minimal environmental impact, using renewable energy sources, eco-friendly materials, and water conservation practices. Additionally, Inkaterra participates in reforestation projects and wildlife preservation efforts in the region. The hotel’s orchid garden boasts over 370 native orchid species.

Dining Experiences

The dining experiences at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel were excellent, highlighting the rich flavors and culinary traditions of Peru. The main restaurant, Cafe Inkaterra, overlooks the Urubamba River.  Closed during the pandemic, it opened again just after my May 2024 visit.

The hotel dining room offered Peruvian specialities and classic favorites, beautifully presented. For breakfast, I enjoyed a lavish buffet spread that included tropical fruits, freshly baked pastries, traditional Peruvian dishes like tamales and quinoa porridge. A menu offers eggs and other traditional breakfast fare. Dinner was a gourmet affair, with dishes such as alpaca tenderloin, trout ceviche, quinoa risotto, as well as chicken, lamb and beef dishes.

Final Thoughts

My visit to Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel was a wonderful blend of luxury, nature, and fine dining.   The hotel’s dedication to sustainability and its seamless integration with the natural environment create a unique and memorable experience for guests. I highly recommend a stay at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. It is a unique cloud forest retreat away from the noise and crowds of the town. (Note of caution: this is not an ideal setting for anyone with mobility issues. It is not wheelchair accessible due to the many stone steps.) If you’re spending more than a day in Machu Pichu, an overnight or two at Inkaterra will enhance your visit to the area.
